Cremated Remains Stolen From Family's Vehicle, Police Say

A relative's remains were stolen from a car parked in a Santa Monica parking lot. The family hoped to spread the ashes along the coast.

SANTA MONICA, CA — A Virginia family hoping to spread their loved one's ashes along the coast lost the cremated remains when someone broke into their car and stole the urn, according to Santa Monica Police Department.

The remains belonged to a sister and aunt, Anne Laine, who had recently passed, ABC7 reports. The family is heartbroken.

The family was visiting Santa Monica when the burglary happened June 13 about 12:30 p.m. at 1555 2nd Street, at Parking Structure 8 Level 2, police told Patch.

The victim returned to his vehicle and noticed the passenger-side window was smashed and several items were taken, police said. Among the items taken was an urn with a relative’s cremated remains.

No suspect information is available, police said.
