Get Ready to Glow in Santa Monica

In its third iteration (the first two were held in 2008 and 2010), the Santa Monica Glow Festival this year in and around Santa Monica beach on Sept. 28 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. will include a classical musical art installation at the iconic carousel on Santa Monica Pier.

Glow is the first all-night art event in the United States that emphasizes the commissioning of original artwork. Glow projects invite active audience engagement and exploration and constantly surprise in their unexpected placement in spaces and times not normally reserved for fine art.

The evening is expected once again to attract between 100,000 and 200,000 visitors.

This year’s display incorporating 15 art projects complete with interactive music and an array of psychedelic light – will for the first time incorporate the carousel.

Entitled, “The Rest Is Noise: A Carousel Ride Through 20th Century Music,”  will e produced by Jacaranda, the classical music series known for rarely heard, new and modern music.

As the carousel lights up Jacaranda will play breakthrough pieces of 20th-century music from Mahler to Adams. According to Jacaranda, “Riders will hear a series of 12-second musical excerpts, each by a different composer, as they revolve on the carousel — 100 years of music in five minutes.”
