Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Jolts Southland

SANTA MONICA, CA — A magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred early Monday in Lennox, near Inglewood, and rattled the Southland.

The jolt was felt at 4:44 a.m., according to the USGS. It was one of three small earthquakes that hit the region.

No injuries or damage was immediately reported.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones shared more information via Twitter about the early morning quake:

"The M4.0 that just happened was under Lennox, CA, near Inglewood," Jones said. "Very deep at 20 km, so everyone is at least 20 km away. Would have been felt by most people awake in LA. Movement was thrust, probably not on any mapped fault."

"The Lennox M4.0 also had a M3.0 foreshock and a bunch All the events are at the same deep depth," she added.

A first quake at magnitude 3.0 was reported at 4:15 a.m., according to USGS. It was centered about a mile east-northeast of Lennox. People felt the jolt from the South Bay to Montebello, all the way to Burbank.
