SANTA MONICA, CA — The McClure Tunnel in Santa Monica will close for upgrades beginning the first week of January, Caltrans announced.

Drivers can expect the tunnel to close overnight, along with nearby ramps, Santa Monica Daily Press reports.

The work is planned from the Santa Monica (10) Freeway at Lincoln Boulevard to the Broadway Pedestrian Overcrossing on Highway 1, PCH. Crews will upgrade the lighting system in the McClure Tunnel to LED lights for improved visibility.

The first queue warning system in Los Angeles County will be installed on the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway to give drivers real-time alerts when traffic backs up in the tunnel. It will tell drivers to slow down as they approach the tunnel.

The project also includes adding a speed feedback sign, a high-friction surface treatment to the pavement inside the tunnel, and an upgrade to overhead signage in the project area.
