Pier Construction Gets Underway
The Santa Monica Pier is undergoing renovation as part of a year-long project to restore the landmark structure.

The city has begun work on the aging Santa Monica Pier, a year-long project to upgrade the structure for safety and service.
The pier was built in the 1900s and is the hub of tourism activity in Santa Monica. The work wiill involve a large portion of the pier stretching from the edge of the sand to about 365 feet west over the ocean.
Both the pier and businesses on it will remain open during the construction.

According to city officials, the work will include:Â
- Construction of a 20-foot wide pedestrian trestle on the south side of the pier, beginning at the western edge of the Newcomb Pier and extending 175 feet west around the construction zone
- Installation of new concrete columns Â
- Removal of the existing timber columns, timber substructure, and installation of the new concrete substructureÂ
- Installation of the new timber deckingÂ
