SANTA MONICA, CA -- The Santa Monica Police Department is encouraging residents to interact with its officers through its new "Meet Your Neighbors Program."
The goal of the event is to engage the community over coffee or ice cream.
"Our challenge to the community is to step out of their comfort zone and get to know the people on their block – their neighbors. SMPD will enter all participants into a raffle for a free block party," read a Monday press release.

The program was created after the Police Department saw success in engaging the community after participating in the National Coffee with a Cop Day in October.
"SMPD is now encouraging the community to engage in a similar practice so that residents in their neighborhoods strengthen the unity within. Chief Jacqueline A. Seabrooks would like to encourage our residents to host a get-together on their block to simply get to know their neighbors better. These interactions are the building blocks for strong bonds that grow into lasting partnerships," the press release read.
