The 31st annual Los Angeles Marathon kicked off Sunday morning on Valentine's Day.

LOS ANGELES, CA - Runners in the 2016 Los Angeles Marathon are on their way to Santa Monica. A winner has been declared in both races.
- In the men’s race, Weldon Kirui of Kenya crossed the finish line with a time of 2:13:07. Willy Koitile, also of Kenya, finished 15 seconds later in second place.
- Natalia Lehonkova of Ukraine finished first in the women’s race with a timing of 2:30:42.
- Alicia Ibarra of Mexico finished first in the women’s wheelchair race with a timing of 2:15:56.
- American James Senbeta finished first in the men’s wheelchair race with a timing of 1:36:10.
Temperatures were expected to be in the mid-80s during the day. To combat the brutal heat, the race was held weeks earlier than normal and the starting time was moved up to help runners stay in the cool air longer, the LA times reports.
