Saratoga High Student Receives 1st Scholarship To Study In China
The boy will study Mandarin in Chengdu on a full ride from the U.S. State Department, the first of its kind for the Silicon Valley school.
SARATOGA, CA — A rising senior at Saratoga High School has been selected to study Mandarin this summer in Chengdu, China, with a full scholarship from the U.S. Department of State.
Shivam Mani is the first student from the school to be selected for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth, and was chosen from a pool of over 3,300 applicants, according to the program.
He's among 660 students who will study Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian, Russian or Turkish in the coming year. Mani will live with a host family in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province, experience local culture and receive formal language lessons.

The state department's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs launched the scholarship with other governmental organizations in 2006 to improve international dialogue and global economic competitiveness for U.S. citizens.
