Congressional Candidates to Debate Thursday

In what's being called one of the hottest congressional races in the country, candidates in the new 30th District are scheduled to debate Thursday night in Woodland Hills.

Candidates in the new 30th Congressional District, which includes Sherman Oaks and other Valley communities, are to debate Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited.

The Woodland Hills-Tarzana Chamber will hold a town hall meeting to present the candidates for the new 30th Congressional District (CD) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 in the former Dick’s Sporting Goods store, on the basement level of the Westfield Promenade Mall in Warner Center. Admission to the event is free. Complimentary valet parking is provided by Ruth’s Chris.

The candidates to be featured are Republicans Mark Reed and Susan Shelly and Democratic representatives Howard Berman and Brad Sherman. This election is unique because the new 30th CD was created following the recent redistricting pits long time members of the House of Representatives against one another. Both Sherman and Berman have their stalwart supporters who surely will be in attendance. Reed and Shelly will be able to showcase their candidacies.

The event will be in a town hall format where each candidate will be asked questions from chamber members and from audience members. All of the candidates will be invited to make an opening statement about themselves followed by a questions and answer period covering the following subjects: The economy in general, what is working and not working in congress and foreign policy. The candidates will then be given an opportunity to make a closing statement. Each candidate will be given equal opportunity to answer all questions.

“We hope the community joins us for this very important debate on the issues that will affect us all," said Sean McCarthy, the chamber’s chairmen of government affairs. "I expect the 2012 national election to be critical to the nation’s short term and long term future.”
