Van Nuys Optimist Club Hosts Essay Competition

Winners will progress to the District Level, where one person will win a $2,500 college scholarship.

VAN NUYS, CA — Optimists looking for the silver lining in the coronavirus pandemic can rejoice: The Van Nuys Optimist Club will take part in the annual essay challenge sponsored by Optimist International. Students under 19 who have not yet finished high school are encouraged to submit an essay on the topic of "Reaching your Dreams by Choosing Optimism."

Winners of the club level competition will receive a medallion, and advance to the District competition. At that level, one winner will receive a $2,500 college scholarship, along with a commemorative plaque.

Essays must be typed, double-spaced and between 700-800 words. The application deadline is March 21 and full details are available here.

Optimist International was founded in 1919 and currently has over 2,500 clubs across the world, according to the organizations website. Along with the essay challenge, the organization also hosts speaker series, community service opportunities and sponsors a nationally ranked junior golf tournament.
