VIDEO: Sherman Oaks Teens are Finalists in Google Science Fair
Maya Flannery, Arjun Mahajan and Jonathan Berman have formed a team they call "Innovation in Autism."
"Innovation in Autism," a team consisting of Sherman Oaks teens Maya Flannery, Arjun Mahajan and Jonathan Berman, has reached the finals of the Google Science Fair, a science project competition for teenagers across the world.Â
Flannery, Mahajan and Berman, all age 13, have focused their project on children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and helping them alleviate their tendency to engage in repetitive motion, such as hand-flapping and rocking.Â
"Based on our research, we felt that the most effective way to do this was to create a wristband that would autonomously sense physical self-stimulatory repetitive arm motions and cue the child to stop engaging in stereotypy by vibrating," wrote Flannery, Mahjan and Berman. "A key part of our goal was to create a device that could carry out functions on its own, and allow the user to learn to stop repetitive behaviors without constant supervision from an adult."
