Vons Statement on Union Canceling Contract Extension
Vons responds to the grocery workers union's announcement that it was giving the supermarket chain 72 hours notice of cancellation of the contract extension.
Editor's note: The following press release was issued by Vons after the United Food and Commercial Workers union announced Thursday night that it was canceling the contract extension that was agreed upon in March. The union's move, a mandatory step before a walkout, was made in an attempt to speed negotiations, according to union official Greg Conger. It does not necessarily mean that workers will go on strike Sunday.
Â
Los Angeles, September 15, 2011—We are disappointed by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Locals’ decision to give the employers 72 hour notice of the cancellation of the contract extension. Doing so needlessly alarms our employees and our customers. The notice does not mean a strike is imminent or that a strike will necessarily occur at any point. The notice simply allows the union the ability to call a strike if they choose to do so. Vons and the other employers intend to remain focused on the negotiation process and urge the unions to do the same.Â
