Alverno Heights Academy is excited to announce open auditions for high school males for their spring production of Hairspray in April.

Alverno Heights Academy is excited to announce open auditions for high school males for their spring production of Hairspray. Hairspray will run April 20, 21, and 22 at the Lanterman Auditorium in La Cañada.
Hairspray is an American musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scot Wittman and Shaiman and book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The show, set in 1960s Baltimore, tells the story of dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad who auditions for a spot on “The Corny Collins Show” and wins. She becomes a celebrity overnight, a trendsetter in dance, fun and fashion who sets out to topple Corny’s reigning dance queen, win the guy, and bring racial integration to the show.
For their upcoming production, Alverno Heights Academy is in search of high school males for members of the ensemble as well as the following roles:

Edna Turnblad
Tracy’s mother and laundry business owner, who is agoraphobic and ashamed of her obesity. Although originally unsupportive of Tracy’s desire to audition for “The Corny Collins Show,” she changes her tune and thinking when Tracy becomes an overnight celebrity passionate about igniting change.
Seaweed J. Stubbs
The son of Maybelle “Motormouth” Stubbs is a strong singer and skilled dancer who teaches Tracy several new moves and falls in love with her friend, Penny.

Link Larkin
The lead male dancer and singer on “The Corny Collins Show” and the object of both Amber and Tracy’s affections. After tiring of Amber’s games, he falls for Tracy and supports her efforts to integrate the show.
Corny Collins
The host of “The Corny Collins Show” in Baltimore. His politically progressive attitude lead him to fight his show’s imposed segregation as well as his producer, Velma Von Tussle.
Mr. Pinky
The owner of a dress shop, Mr. Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway, who hires Tracy to be his celebrity spokesmodel.
Ensemble
Vocal Auditions will be held on Wednesday, January 18 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Dance Auditions will be held on Thursday, January 19 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. For Vocal Auditions, please bring 16-32 bars of music from a Broadway musical. In order to be considered for a role, actors must attend both days of the audition. Call backs for roles will be held on Friday, January 20 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Auditions and show rehearsals will be held at Alverno Heights Academy at 200 North Michillinda Avenue, Sierra Madre, CA 91024.
