City to Spend $50,000 to Fix Up Housing Unit at Sierra Vista Park

The Sierra Madre City Council voted Tuesday night to spend $50,000 to rehabilitate a one-time maintenance man's residence off of Sierra Vista Park and rent it out as low-income housing, according to Elisa Cox, the city's public information officer.

The 962-square foot, 2-bedroom-home, known as the "duty-man house," is in the upper area of the park and has been previously rented to member of the Sierra Madre water maintenance team.  It has been unoccupied for eight or nine years and is currently being used to store documents, according to a city staff report.

The $50,000 will be used to fix up the home and get it ready to rent.

The home could be rented to a low-income or very-low-income individual as a way of helping to meet state requirements for affordable housing.  As noted in an article from Monday on a residential zoning change the Council will soon be discussing, the city is in the process of attempting to meet its state affordable housing goal for the 2008-2014 Housing Element.
