The following is an official message from Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44), who represents both South Gate and Lynwood:
Washington, DC— Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) voted “no” on the Farm Bill, which excluded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that had been part of the legislation for decades. She released the following statement regarding her vote:
“For decades, the Farm Bill has included provisions to fund SNAP, a critical food assistance program that helps to feed millions of low-income families. Across the nation, tens of millions of American families struggle to put food on the table. In the communities I represent alone, 145,000 people rely on SNAP to eat. Over half of them are children. This bill strips SNAP from the legislation, neglecting the millions of Americans who depend on this meager benefit.

The devastating state of poverty in this nation demands our attention. We live in the richest country in the world and it is shameful that we allow our fellow citizens to go hungry. This legislation pulls the rug out from under millions of hungry Americans putting them at even greater risk and I could not in good conscience vote for it.”
