LOS ANGELES, CA — Firefighters Sunday extinguished an exterior fire next to a four-story apartment building under construction in South Los Angeles.

"The fire was contained to the exterior and prevented from extending into the main structure," said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. "An additional outside fire extended into a converted, detached garage, which firefighters quickly extinguished."

A total of 83 firefighters were assigned to battle the blaze, Stewart said. Firefighters dispatched at 12:51 p.m. to 100 E. 79th St. had the fire out within 18 minutes of their arrival, she added.
