Lynwood's Lady Knights Honored for State Championship Win

The board present all players with medals.

The Lynwood High School (LHS) Girls Basketball team, the Lady Knights, was recognized by the Lynwood Unified Board of Education for their victory at the CIF State Division II Championship. The LUSD board provided each player with a medal during a meeting on April 9.

“I’m so proud of our Lady Knights for this great accomplishment,” said Maria G. López, the LUSD Board of Education President, in a statement. “They’re a wonderful example of what our students can achieve.”

On March 23 the Lady Knights  brought their 4th state championship in LHS history after winning against St. Francis of Mountain View with a final score of 39-26. The latter combined score turned out to be the fewest points recorded in a girls state basketball finals in history, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Parents and several officials from the Lynwood Unified School District attended the game in Sacramento to show their support, stated an LUSD press release.

Prior to winning the state championship, the LHS girls first had to win their league, go onto win first at the CIF Divisional Tournament and later place first in the regional competition. This streak of wins eventually led them to the state championship game.

“These young ladies are so talented, but what everyone has been so impressed by is the amazing amount of heart and character that they have shown, both on and off the court,” said Ellis Barfield, LHS Girls Basketball Head Coach.

The team dedicated their season to James Murray, an LHS vice-principal and counselor who passed away in February.
