With the gradual easing of state-wide restrictions, the City of South Gate has confirmed in last night's meeting that we will be seeing the return of several public spaces that had been closed during the lock down.

Steve Costley, Deputy Director City of South Gate Parks & Recreation Department noted that beginning June 1st**, we will be seeing the reopening of the following facilities:

  • Hollydale Dog Park
  • Hollydale Regional Park Parking Lots
  • Circle Park Parking Lot
  • Tennis Courts inside the Parks

Mr. Costley also informed the public that there will be a food distribution Saturday May 30th held at South Gate Park. The line will start forming as early as 6AM and the distribution itself will begin at 9AM. All attendees are required to stay in their vehicles as no walk ups will be accepted. Up to 1,200 families are expected to attend this weekend's food drive. Other recent food drives put on by various groups have been very successful so please anticipate a large turnout and arrive. For more info please contact scostley@sogate.org or contact city hall. Chief Randy Davis addressed the concern of early use of illegal fireworks beginning to be heard throughout the city. This year the South Gate Police Department will be engaged in an enforcement and educational process with residents. The educational part being road signs reminding people that the use of illegal fireworks is prohibited and citations will be issued. The enforcement part is a dedicated team of active patrol officers issuing said citations with the first citation starting at $2,000. If you have questions, concerns or would like to report activity, you are encouraged to contact South Gate Police Department Non-Emergency at (323) 563-5436

Please do not engage in illegal fireworks for the safety of families in the community and for the tranquility of South Gate residential areas.

Lastly, Public Works Director Art Cervantes noted that the various roadway improvement projects that include Garfield/ Firestone among others, are reschedule to continue construction bids and management proposals this week. After this the city is one more step closer to the project implementation process.

**Please follow CDC guidelines when you are at city parks or public spaces by practicing social distancing, wearing face masks where requested/required and washing of hands when returning home.**

As always, please be kind to your fellow neighbor in person and online. Keep our city beautiful and clean so children, seniors and adults can continue to enjoy working, living and playing in South Gate.

Your Neighbor,

Jim
