Southern California Universities Ranked Best at Serving Public Good
Several schools throughout California earned top scores for cutting edge research, community service, and graduating low-income students.
UCLA ranked sixth in the United States for colleges that serve the public good in ratings released today by Washington Monthly.
The publication rates universities on criteria such as recruiting and graduating low-income students, producing cutting-edge research and encouraging students to participate in community service.
The Washington Monthly rankings differ from those put out by U.S. News & World Report, which tends to favor private universities. By contrast, 16 of the top 20 Washington Monthly colleges are publicly supported.

UC San Diego topped the list for the sixth year in a row. UC Riverside placed second.
Rounding out the top five were Texas A&M, UC Berkeley and Stanford University.

Caltech ranked 47th on list, while USC was 65th.
