  • Have a trusted relative or neighbor collect your mail, packages, and flyers that accumulate a your front door, or have the US Postal Service hold your mail (https://www.usps.com/)
  • Never leave a spare key outside under a doormat or behind a planter. If you need to provide someone access to your house, arrange ahead of time to hand them the key.
  • Placing lights, radios, and sprinklers on timers can give the appearance that you are home. There are many devices available at home improvement stores that let you control appliances and lights from anywhere in the world through an app on your cell phone. Remote wi-fi connected surveillance cameras can also give you peace of mind. Now is a great time check your camera’s battery level or consider installing a camera system!
  • Provide a copy of your travel plans including flight, train/bus, hotel information, and expected return date with a relative or friend.
  • If traveling outside of the country, know your closest US Embassy location in case of an emergency, or if you need assistance from the US. Also, prior to leaving, check the US State Department’s website for any travel advisories (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel.html).
  • Double check with your cell phone provider to ensure that you are enrolled in an international plan, if traveling internationally. If you’d like to stay connected, consider renting a portable wi-fi device at your destination.
  • When packing bags, it’s a good rule of thumb to pack replaceable items such as clothing and toiletries in your checked-in luggage. Items that are hard to replace such as cameras with memory cards, and medication, should stay with you in your carry-on luggage.

Most importantly, be safe and have fun!
