LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County increased to 9.7 percent in June, up from a revised 9.6 percent in May, the state Employment Development Department announced today.
The 9.7 percent unemployment rate was below the 11.1 percent rate in June 2012, according to the EDD.
South Gate saw an increase in its rate of unemployment. In April 2013, South Gate registered an unemployment rate of 11.9 percent, which was smaller than the 13.0 percent it recorded for June 2013.
Lynwood also saw an increase in its unemployment rate. After registering a 16.1  percent rate of unemployment in June 2013, and a 14.8 percent in April 2013.Â
In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the unemployment rate was 6.1 percent, up from 5.5 percent in May. California's jobless rate was 8.5 percent in June, down from 8.6 percent in May and from 10.6 percent in June 2012, according to the EDD.
The comparable estimates for the nation were 7.6 percent in June, 7.6Â percent in May and 8.2 percent a year ago.
Total nonfarm employment increased by 200 jobs in Los Angeles County between May and June to reach just more than 3.9 million. The leisure and hospitality sector showed the largest gain, adding 7,000 jobs, while education services lost 7,800 positions, according to the EDD.
A total of 481,000 people were unemployed in June in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of more than 4.9 million.
