California Becomes First State To Ban Straws

Sort of. Only Full-Service Covered.

Those patrons who want straws with their drinks must ask for them. This according to a new California State law. The law was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown Thursday. This makes California the first state to bar full service restaraunts from automatically giving out plastic straws. The effective date is next year.

This does not ban straws completely like some communities have.

This law only applies to full-service restaurants, not fast-food establishments. Restaurants that do no comply will get two warnings and then risk a fine of up to $300 per year.

Some politicians who support the law call it a small step on reducing pollution.

Opponents say the new law is to little and won't help the environment. They also claim that it will hurt disabled persons who depend on straws.
