Increase in Robocall scam

Of particular concern are calls with Chinese speaking women

The San Marino Police Department and other authorities are warning communities and residents about an increase in Robo-Call scams. Of particular concern are calls with Chinese speaking women, aimed at the Chinese immigrant population.

The call tells the individual that the call is from the Chinese Consulate and they have an important document to pick up. If the person receiving the call does not proceed with the call their status in the U.S. could be affected. They are told to hang on, then a 'live' scammer comes on the line and requests that the individual wire money.

Authorities say these calls are particularly effective because they prey on people's fears over matters such as immigration status.

Reports also say that blocking the call can be somewhat effective, but warn that few of the calls actually come from valid phone numbers. Some call actually show a Caller ID from China. Some victims report several of these calls per day with each having a different phone number.

Authorities are offering these tips to stay safe.
