SOUTH PASADENA, (Calif.) – At 8:00 p.m., on Friday, April 23, a water main break at 1927 Via Del Rey, between Los Alisos and La Terraza was reported in the high pressure Bilicke Zone. The break was an 8” Cast Iron (CI) main installed in the 1960s. Staff responded immediately and isolated the break by 8:45 p.m. Eight service connections were impacted by the temporary shutdown for the repair. Staff worked throughout the night and completed repairs and water was turned back on at 8:00 a.m. this morning (Saturday). Before turning water on, last night staff flushed the entire Bilicke zone for 2 hours to ensure that the water is clean and safe for drinking at the highest possible standards. Water is disinfected at the source before it is distributed to our residents through the water mains. To continue to ensure that the water City supply to residents is safest to the highest possible level, staff has also taken water quality samples, which have been delivered to the state accredited laboratory for testing. Staff anticipates the results sometime tomorrow (Sunday). Residents will be advised via the City’s website of the lab results as soon as they are received. You are encouraged to check our website at www.southpasadenaca.gov to receive updates as we learn more.

As a precautionary measure the City is also initiating a Boil Water Order.
City crews are backfilling the trench and repairing the damaged roadway, which we anticipate to be completed by the end of today. Only two driveways (1921 & 1927) were affected. Staff met with residents at those addresses and apprised them of the situation. Staff also remained in contact with State water officials to provide them with the immediate action taken to ensure the water is safe.
If you have questions about other uses of tap water, such as bathing and dish washing, please call your water system or read this guidance: https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/emergency/drinking/drinking-water-advisories/boil-water-advisory.html
