Will Lightning And Hail Strike The Peninsula This Week?

Stormy weather is in the forecast this week across the Bay Area. Officials share lightning safety tips.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A rainstorm heading toward the Bay Area could bring lightning, small hail and gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday night is forecast to remain dry and the greatest weather threat looms Tuesday afternoon. High elevations could even see some snow Tuesday. There isn't expected to be much lightning, but it's possible that "a strike or two" could land, NWS said in Monday morning's forecast.

Officials aren't too worried about the possibility of fire burn scar area debris flow, which occurs when water flows downhill through burned areas — carrying with it burned trees, rocks, silt and other debris. NWS is, however, concerned about the possibility of lightning in fire-stricken areas.

Strong weather "at the wrong place could cause a problem," NWS wrote.

Gusty winds could cause minor tree damage, NWS. Expect moderate or heavy downpours at times, which could cause some ponding in streets.

Warmer, drier conditions are expected to return by the end of the week, but there's a slight chance that rain could return Friday and Saturday, according to NWS.

Lightning Safety Tips

NWS urges people to go inside a sturdy house, building or car if they see or hear thunder or lightning. People should remain indoors for at least a half-hour after hearing thunder.

The public should not seek cover in tall structures such as sheds, pavilions, picnic shelters or tall trees, according to NWS. The public should avoid standing near water or metal objects, and using or touching outlets, corded phones or windows.
