Hummus & Pita Co. To Open 1st CA Locale In San Fernando Valley

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA — The Hummus & Pita Co., a fast-growing, East Coast-based restaurant chain with such Mediterranean fare as gyros, pita and laffa breads, Turkish and vegan Morrocan meatballs, shawarma and cous cous, plans to open in June its first, flagship California location in North Hollywood.

Launched in Brooklyn in 2011, Hummus & Pita Co. prides itself on its Executive Chef Jose Tapia's menu, with vegetarian and vegan options, that draws influences from cuisines in Greece, Israel, Morocco and the Middle East.

The new locale will be at NOHO West Shopping Center on Laurel Canyon Boulevard, joining Starbucks, California Fish Grill, Robeks and other establishments in the walk-through mall with outdoor patio.

The NoHo franchise-owner is Dan Markel, an experienced restaurant investor with a portfolio that includes running Jersey Mike’s, according to company officials.

“Ever since first learning about The Hummus & Pita Co. and how the concept is really pioneering healthy fast-causal options, I knew I wanted to get involved,” Markel said. "We’re excited to introduce its menu of health-conscious eats to this neighborhood of Angelenos, and we’re confident that it will be well-received among the community.”

The chain's proprietary vegan Morrocan meatballs and shawarma, cooked in a traditional taboon oven, and such hummus-based desserts as the Chickpea Chiller, were recognized by media outlets including ABC’s The Chew, People Magazine, Business Insider and PopSugar.

And Markel already has eyes set on possible expansion to locales in Toluca Lake, Studio City, Burbank, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Mission Hills, with his business partner Narek Khudabakhshyan, the company said.

The Hummus & Pita Co. currently operates eateries in New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey, Michigan, Alabama and Georgia, with sights set on coast-to-coast expansion.
