STUDIO CITY, CA — Councilmember Mike Bonin and Councilmember-elect Nithya Raman will participate in a policy teach-in to advocate for rent cancellation during the coronavirus pandemic. Hosted by Healthy L.A. Coalition, the teach-in will take place on December 3rd from 5:30-7:30 and will be hosted on Zoom.

We've lost 7,000 people to #COVID19 in #LACounty," the coalition wrote. "Eviction is putting thousands more at risk. #HousingisHealth! & we need to #CancelRent & #CancelMortgages to ensure everyone can stay safe at home."

Many have cried for rent cancellation to keep people in their houses as health officials urge people to stay home to limit the spread of the coronavirus. On November 16, a federal judge denied a request from the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles for a preliminary injunction that would have blocked the city's eviction ban and rent freeze.

"With this pandemic fueled recession, families are falling into poverty, going hungry and becoming homeless," Councilmember Bonin said in a statement about the teach-in. "We need to take big actions to help. Join @HealthyLA_Coa, tenants, homeowners, me & @nithyavraman Thursday for a teach-in on the need to #CancelRent and #CancelMortgages."
