Buy Frank Zappa's $9M California Home: On Sale Saturday

HOLLYWOOD, CA - Frank Zappa’s home in the Hollywood Hills is for sale. Not only is the home unique, the way it’s being sold is a story in itself.

Constructed in 1939, Zappa lived in the home from 1968 until his death in 1993. His widow Gail continued to live in the home until her death last year.

Built into the home is a recording studio that Zappa named the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen, and several songs were recorded there that were eventually released. There’s also a vault that contains a treasure trove of recordings and videos never released.

Selling a home that’s remained in one family for several decades isn’t unusual, but the way this home is being sold certainly has an unusual twist--it’s being offered for $9 million on Kickstarter. If sold, the money will be divided between the Zappa heirs and a documentary filmmaker who hopes to preserve recordings made by Zappa and transform them into a film titled “Who the F*@% is Frank Zappa?”

Previous offerings from documentary filmmaker Alex Winter include “Deep Web” and “Downloaded.” He calls the $9 million being asked for the home a bargain for the right Zappa fan.

Zillow reports that the 7 bedroom, 6 bathroom home is currently valued at $7,039,394. It is located at 7885 Woodrow Wilson Drive, Los Angeles, 90046.
