Union City Police Officer Shot: Man Arrested
The shooting happened during looting in San Leandro on May 31.
UNION CITY, CA — A man accused of shooting a Union City Police officer is behind bars.
Luracious Paul Wilkerson has been charged with attempted murder after prosecutors say he fired eight gunshots directly at police officers while looting in San Leandro on May 31. A Union City police officer was injured in the hand by a ricocheted round.
Both Union City and Fremont sent officers to assist the San Leandro Police Department because the looting was out of control. The suspect fired at officers from all three departments, according to the complaint.

“The night of this incident posed significant challenges for law enforcement and our community. The professional work done by our staff and our partnering agencies resulted in the swift apprehension of the suspect,” said Chief Jeff Tudor.
Wilkerson is charged with 8 counts of attempted murder and 8 counts of assault with a firearm on police officers, along with multiple enhancements. The 33-year-old resident of Sacramento is being held without bail at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

San Leandro Police investigators were able to get video of the suspect, his vehicle, and the crime scene, which led to the arrest.
The shooting happened at Bayfair Center on East 14th Street. The looting happened following the death in Minneapolis of a George Floyd, a Black man who was held down by a white police officer.
