The crash was reported in Fremont Sunday morning during a fierce rain storm.

FREMONT, CA — A man who died in a solo vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 880 in Fremont on Sunday morning was a radio, television and film major at San Jose State University who had applied to graduate last month, the university said today.

The Alameda County coroner's bureau identified the victim of the crash at about 7:10 a.m. on Sunday on northbound Highway 880 at state Highway 262, which leads to Mission Boulevard, as 29-year-old Karlos de la Torre of Fremont.

California Highway Patrol Officer J. Salavar said de la Torre went off the highway and his car then caught fire.

Salavar said the crash is still under investigation and officers are looking into whether it was weather-related or if de la Torre may have fallen asleep.

She said at this point it doesn't appear that the crash was alcohol-related but no final determination has been made.

San Jose State spokeswoman Patricia Harris said de la Torre attended classes at the university from August 2014 through December 2016. Harris said de la Torre applied to graduate in December but she hasn't yet been able to confirm that he actually graduated.

In his Linkedin profile, de la Torre said he transferred to San Jose State from Ohlone College in Fremont, where he said he took general education courses and focused on classes such as video editing, digital video, graphic design, the history of film, introduction to filming, internet television, live news broadcasting and digital photography.

De la Torre said, "I also took Acting for the Camera/Commercial Workshop, Intermediate Acting and Improv. I have a passion for my career. My goal is to acquire a permanent job as a professional actor and entertainer."

He said, "I am also working on becoming a professional in the television and film industry as well as in photography."

De la Torre described himself as "an artistic individual with an eye for detail, design and aesthetics."

He said, "I have drawings I have made by hand, a gallery of photographs that I have taken and edited and a set that I designed and developed."

De la Torre said that set is currently a working set for Ohlone College's new broadcasting class, which is called, "Internet Television."

De la Torre said he was working in welding and sheet metal at Industrial Electric Manufacturing in Fremont and previously worked as a bartender at a Red Lobster restaurant and as a certified personal trainer and
sales representative for Fitness 19.
