Rep. Karen Bass Remembers the L.A. Riots on 20th Anniversary
Rep. Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, remembers the L.A. Riots that started April 29, 1992.

Rep. Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, in an article on the Huffington Post on Monday looks back at the L.A. Riots two decades later and warns of misconceptions that linger about the nature of the uprising.
Bass, who was elected to Congress in 2010, is running unopposed for 37th Congressional District seat, which includes Mar Vista and Culver City and parts of Venice, Westwood and Century City.
The 53-year-old Bass wrote that "we are first-person witnesses to the undeniable reality that poverty and economic distress -- not race -- were the primary factors in the upheaval."
Getting the history of the L.A. riots is "essential to understanding why, and how, Los Angeles is moving toward a brighter future," she wrote.
