Venice's Viral 'Bernie Baby' Dies of SIDS

Four-month-old Oliver Jack Carter Lomas-Davis, who captured hearts dressed up as Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, died unexpectedly.

Oliver Jack Carter Lomas-Davis, the “Bernie Baby” viral sensation, was only four-months-old, but he took the world by storm as the unofficial mascot of the Bernie Sanders political movement.

Now millions are mourning his passing Feb. 25 of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. His mother mother, Susan Lomas of Venice, California announced his passing on Facebook.

"Oliver Jack Carter Lomas... I love you dearly, I love you most. I love you with all my heart and soul. I know that God will keep you near since God and truth are here," she wrote.

Oliver captured hearts during a February Sanders campaign event in Nevada when his mother dressed him up as a Bernie twin complete with tie, horn rimmed glasses and bushy hair and white eyebrows. He caught the candidate’s attention, and pictures of Oliver and Sanders posing together went viral.

On twitter, the @BernieSandersBrigade announced a moment of social media silence in honor of Oliver.

The outpouring of support on social media and a GoFundMe page set up for the family was instantaneous.

“So sorry for your loss, Heaven gained a beautiful little Angel,” Christy Scott-Pinter wrote on Facebook. “Although I don't know you personally, you and your Family are in my thoughts and Prayers.”

Donors have given nearly $18,000 to help cover the family with Oliver’s funeral expenses. He will be laid to rest at 12:30 Tuesday at the Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills.

Oliver, who was born Oct. 17, 2015, is one of 1,500 babies who die of SIDS each year in this country. There is no known cause of SIDS, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

On his memorial page, loved ones remembered him for touching so many lives in such a short amount of time, noting “Oliver Jack Carter Lomas-Davis was an adorable infant who brought smiles to not only his family, but to millions online.”
