MARINA - Marina police arrested two people Sunday after a high speed chase up and back down Highway 1 ended when the suspect vehicle became stuck in ice plant and sand after careening off the road.

Kayla Ann Miles, a 25-year-old resident of Marina, and 21-year-old Kevin Easter Jr., also from Marina, were arrested for fleeing from officers in a vehicle. Miles also faces other vehicle theft warrant charges.

According to police, a Marina officer was on patrol just before midnight on Sunday, June 26, in the 300 block of Carmel Avenue when he ran a registration check on an out-of-state license plate.

Marina police say the fleeing vehicle, driven by Miles, left the city on Highway 1 going southbound at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Officers pursued the vehicle south on Highway 1 until the vehicle exited the highway into the city of Monterey, according to police. Miles then reversed direction and headed back onto Highway 1, going northbound.

Marina police say once the suspect vehicle reached the Imjin Parkway off-ramp on Highway 1, the driver again exited the highway.

Due to the speed of the vehicle, however, Miles was unable to negotiate the off-ramp and ended up driving off the roadway, where the vehicle became stuck in the sand and ice plant, according to Marina police.

Both suspects fled the stolen vehicle on foot.

Easter, the passenger from the vehicle, was quickly apprehended in the brush area near the scene of the vehicle stop according to police, but the driver fled and was not immediately located.

A perimeter was set up around the immediate area and a K-9 team from the Salinas Police Department was called in to assist in tracking the suspect still on the loose.

Marina police say the K-9 dog located Miles hiding in a brushy area a short distance from where the vehicle had come to a stop.

As the chase then resumed, police say the K-9 bit Miles to subdue her. She was then taken into custody.

Marina police say Kayla Ann Miles sustained minor injuries from the K-9 bite and was taken to the hospital for treatment prior to being booked into the Monterey County Jail.

Kevin Easter Jr. was uninjured. He was transported and also booked into the jail.
