4 Hurt in Highway 1 Pileup In Watsonville

The chain reaction crash started when a disabled truck stopped traffic, and a van plowed into the line of cars, according to the CHP.

WATSONVILLE, CA — Four people were hospitalized Friday afternoon after a chain reaction collision along southbound state Highway 1 in Watsonville, the California Highway Patrol said.

The wreck, involving multiple cars and a truck pulling farm equipment, happened about 1 p.m. along the highway just south of Harkins Slough.

The CHP said the truck was pulling a broken disc harrow that sparked a fire and came to an emergency stop, forcing three cars behind it to stop as well.

A van came up behind the cars and didn't stop, crashing into one of the vehicles and triggering the chain-reaction collision.

The drivers of the three cars and the van were all hospitalized.

Two drivers, a 64-year-old man from Aptos and a 23-year-old woman from Half Moon Bay, suffered major injuries. Two other drivers, a 28-year-old man and 36-year-old man, both from Watsonville, sustained moderate injuries in the crash.
