Proposition 69 Safeguards Funding for City Transportation Project

Learn more about Proposition 69

Proposition 69, or the lockbox amendment, requires lawmakers to spend new gas tax revenue on transportation projects. This revenue is from Senate Bill 1 (SB1), also known as the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 and provides the City with $880,000 this next fiscal year for transportation projects involving bicycle safety, downtown revitalization, pedestrian and traffic safety, road reconstruction, roadway maintenance, trail maintenance and traffic signals.

Proposition 69 is a constitutional amendment that requires legislators to spend certain parts of the new revenue on transportation projects. It essentially stops legislators from diverting those funds for other purposes. The measure will not increase taxes nor will it affect revenue, but it will determine how money is spent. However an effort is afoot to repeal the gas tax. If it succeeds, it would render Proposition 69 moot.
