Storms Repairs Complete On Soquel Drive In Aptos

Repairs done Friday included the installation of a retaining wall, road regrading and a new guardrail.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Santa Cruz County officials announced Friday repairs are being made to completely restore the area of Soquel Drive in Aptos that the county considers "one of their priority storm repairs." The area of Soquel Drive at Aptos Village is being restored to two lanes, according to the county administrative officer.

The road was scheduled to be repaired by the Friday evening commute hours with mop-up work to continue over the next one to two weeks, county officials said. Repairs done Friday included the installation of a retaining wall, road regrading and a new guardrail.

This project has taken several months to complete as the county and Watsonville-based contractor Granite Construction worked to repair a slipout at Valencia Creek. This slipout had impacted traffic following the
winter of 2016-17, county officials explained.

The Federal Highway Administrative has provided primary funding for this emergency repair project with partial funding from Caltrans. Soquel Drive precedes the construction of Highway 1, as it was
originally built in the 1930s as a part of the former Santa Cruz-Watsonville Highway.
