Watsonville Strawberry Company Gambles On Berry Demand: Report
Driscoll's saw an explosion in demand for berries during the pandemic, The Wall Street Journal reported. But is it here to stay?
WATSONVILLE, CA — Watsonville berry company Driscoll's saw strawberry demand spike during the pandemic, but it's unsure if that level of demand will continue, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Even for Driscoll's, the world's largest berry company, forecasting customer demand is difficult, the paper reported. Strawberry demand outpaced Driscoll's supply in 2020, but the company hopes to get it right this time.
The stakes for produce growers are particularly high given the perishable nature of the product and that produce is often harvested long after it's planted, The Wall Street Journal. And it's unclear how restaurant reopenings, labor shortages and the number of home-based workers could impact the market.
