
The Marching Lions won second place at the California State Band Championship (CSBC) competition Saturday at Huntington Beach High School.
Under the direction of , the band scored only .4 less than the 1st place band, Ocean View of Huntington Beach, the 2011 Division 1 champions. Ocean View High School received a total score of 71 to Fairfax’s 70.6. Fairfax earned top marks for the Color Guard and General Effect, which includes the complexity of the field show design and movement.
Bands must earn high scores in regional competitions in order to qualify to compete in the CSBC tournament. Fairfax won top honors at the Newport Beach and Granada Hills competitions this season, as well as placing second in other tournaments.
“I am proud of my students. They worked very hard all season to earn a place in the CSBC," Vizcarra said. "While it is hard to come so close to first place and come in second, the award nevertheless recognizes what a talented group of young people we have here at Fairfax.”
Other bands competing for Division 1 include Twenty-nine Palms, Calvary Murietta, San Bernardino, and Ocean View.
