On This Day Before Thanksgiving: Belated Thanks to Jane Caper

I had my first job in the bag, like Santa Claus, until the grinch of grimmest reapers swiped it from me...I was lucky to be linked w/ Jane.

I am listening to actor, Rami Malek, on NPR's Fresh Air, and he is telling Terri Gross, how he got his first gig, on Gilmore Girls, without an agent, without SAG membership, he persisted until the person on the other end of the phone said, "Come on in, kid," audition!

On this Thanksgiving, I wanted to offer belated thanks, to Jane Caper, who did me the favor of honoring me, as I honored myself through persistence. I was all, but in, with her, and my bf, who had moved to Atlanta, in advance of me, but when she was unable to interview me, she sent me to a surrogate in NY and my chances, all but disappeared from then.

Pre-social media, when audacity, still had its limits, I wrote her a letter two days before I flew to Atlanta, with no miles, and lucky to have the support of my father, who, I had no idea, would pass away within that same year, nor had he nor my sister. I said,

"Dear Ms. Caper,

By the time you read this, I will be in Atlanta, for only one reason, to see you and let you decide in person, whether I was the person you had intended to hire..."

She saw me and hired me, on the spot, though the position she originally had in mind for me, was taken. She had only one spot to fill, it was in Los Angeles.

I never have forgotten having to make the choice between the man I was bound to in significance and residence, and the opportunity that knocked me for a loop at my door.
I am not special in that regard but I was made special by Jane Caper.
