Legendary Rocket Video Closes Its Doors

Manager Jeff Miller shares his thoughts on the store's demise.

Film lovers are mourning the loss of Rocket Video, what some call the last great independent video rental store in Los Angeles, but none more than Jeff Miller.

The burly film historian served as store manager of the La Brea institution until the bitter end.

"During our final weeks, long-time customers were coming in distraught, some of them even in tears," Miller writes in Zócalo Public Square. "Many seemed to be searching for some exotic answer for why we were closing, but the reasons for Rocket’s demise were what you’d expect: new technologies, Netflix, a bad economy, and fewer customers."

The 30-year-old treasure trove of cult classics and foreign films officially shut down on Oct. 7.
