Tuesday's Scoop: Hanukkah Begins at Sundown

Hanukkah begins Tuesday and continues for eight days. The Jewish holiday will be celebrated with live bands and dancing in neighboring towns.

Greetings, and welcome to today's City Scoop. Here's what's happening Tuesday in West Hollywood:

Main Event: Hanukkah

Hanukkah, Judaism's eight-day Festival of Lights, commemorating the Maccabees' victory over a larger Syrian army in 165 B.C., begins at sundown. Here's a list (compiled with help by City News Service) of nearby public candle lighting ceremonies:

  • The Farmers Market in nearby Los Angeles is holding a Hanukkah Celebration from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., complete with the building of a giant Lego menorah, games, a DJ and a sing-a-long.
  • The Montage Beverly Hills will light their menorah at 5 p.m., and continue every evening through Dec. 28.
  • Over at Universal CityWalk, stop by Chabad's Chanukah from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The free event includes a menorah lighting and outdoor concert, plus hot kosher food.

Other Happenings:

  • The recreational club Time Presses will host a Tuesday Night Social Club from 6:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. in the Great Hall at Plummer Park, featuring karaoke singing, movies, potluck food and an opportunity to communicate in Russian and English languages. There will be a special presentation by  members and an open microphone. Admission is free.
  • A Russian Advisory Board Meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the city's Community Conference Room. On the agenda is a presentation from City Clerk Corey Schaffer regarding the state's Brown Act open-meeting law and parliamentary procedures, followed by elections for an advisory board chair and vice chair.

  • The National Weather Service forecasts sunny weather, with a high near 71 degrees and a low around 45 degrees. North-northeast winds will remain between 5 and 10 miles per hour. The evening will see mostly clear skies.
