Vote Now: West Hollywood's Formosa Cafe In National Geographic Contest

The "beloved" restaurant has the opportunity to win up to $150,000 for preservation or improvement efforts.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA – Formosa Cafe along Route 66 is in the running for a nationwide contest hosted by National Geographic. The contest will award up to $150,000 to preserve or improve one of the 25 projects. If the "beloved" West Hollywood restaurant wins the contest it will be rehabilitated, "passing on an icon to future generations," according to the project's description. It went on to say that places like Formosa Cafe are exceedingly rare today, as they are often threatened by development pressures.

The contest kicked off Monday morning and lists 25 projects from cities across the United States that are vying for funding to preserve or improve theaters, parks, landmarks and other venues in downtowns, historic neighborhoods and cultural districts. The program, called Partners in Preservation: Main Streets, is supported by American Express, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Main Street America.

The public may vote on the website once a day for up to five projects through Oct. 31., and winners will be announced Nov. 2. The sites with the most votes will get grants of up to $150,000 each, with as many projects funded as possible from a pool of $1.5 million.
