West Hollywood Announces Call For Nominations For ‘Green City Awards' And ‘Green Seedlings Prize’

The City of West Hollywood has opened nominations for its Green City Awards and Green Seedlings Prize, as part of an environmental sustainability annual awards program. “In the spirit of ‘think globally, act locally,’ the City of West Hollywood hopes to inspire more green projects and more green leaders in the community,” said City of West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey P. Horvath. “Local green actions are one way the City builds its community resilience and collectively contributes to combating climate change.”

“It’s time again to recognize and highlight our WeHo friends, neighbors, and businesses that are going the extra mile to ensure that West Hollywood remains resilient and sustainable in the 21st century and beyond,” said City of West Hollywood Councilmember John D’Amico. “Please take a moment to nominate a person or idea or business that you believe helps make a difference.”

A total of four Green City Awards will be bestowed, recognizing one individual adult (over age 21); one individual youth (21 or under); one business; and one organization or school. Additionally, one Green Seedlings Prize will be conferred, recognizing green concepts and ideas that have yet to be completed. Recipients will receive an award trophy and will be highlighted by the City. The Green City Awards Ceremony is scheduled to take place at a special meeting of the City’s Public Facilities Commission on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 6:30 p.m.

The Green City Awards complements the City’s longstanding leadership of green policies and practices. The awards program will be administered by the City of West Hollywood and its Public Facilities Commission. Nominations are open to all; anyone interested is encouraged to apply. Applicants can self-nominate or elect to nominate their friends or favorite local business. Considerations for the awards are broad and may include energy, water, waste, materials, trees and plants, biodiversity, and much more.

The City of West Hollywood is dedicated to sustainability and preserving the environment. One of the City of West Hollywood’s core values is Respect for the Environment and the City has a strong record of developing and instituting progressive and forward-thinking environmental policies. The City is currently engaging the community in its people-centered Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) — an effort called “WeHo Climate Action” — to champion local actions needed to meet the challenges of a changing climate. Although climate change is a global problem, the City recognizes that strategies to adapt to a changing climate are best enacted at the local level. The plan will establish more aggressive greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, obtain feedback from those who are most impacted by climate change, empower the community to play an active role in creating a sustainable future, and support a vibrant and sustainable city for current and future generations.
