Gourmet Ice Cream Shop 'Creamistry' Coming To Woodland Hills

Selling made-to-order, decadently rich, frozen treats, with vegan options, the chain's "secret" ingredient: liquid nitrogen!

WOODLAND HILLS, CA – Creamistry, an Irvine-based chain that specializes in made-to-order, liquid nitrogen ice cream using all-natural and organic ingredients, will celebrate its grand opening on April 21 in Woodland Hills with free giveaways from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and free T-shirts for the first 200 paying customers in line, according to the company.

The new shop will be in the shopping center at 23391 Mulholland Drive.

The Woodland Hills location will be owned and operated by Bilal Temel, who also owns the Bristol Creamistry in Costa Mesa. The Woodlands location will be operated by store manager Michael Shangaz.

“We’re excited to bring Creamistry to the Woodlands,” said Shangaz. “The concept is in high demand and we’re thrilled with the way the community has embraced the Bristol location. Creamistry’s premium-quality product allows for fully customizable combinations, and we feel confident that the Woodlands community will fall in love with our delicious ice cream as well.”

Creamistry launched in 2013 after founder Jay Yim was first introduced to liquid nitrogen ice cream when he spotted a street vendor making it during a 2003 trip to South Korea. Born into a family of Korean bakers, Yim and his wife, Katie, made their first homemade ice cream using liquid nitrogen with the help of his father as the quality control "chemist," company officials said.

Over the next two years, the team tinkered with more than 100 flavors and combinations, the best of which eventually became an integral part of Creamistry's menu today.

Creamistry explains how the ordering process works: Customers choose a portion size, then an ice cream base (premium, organic, coconut or non-dairy sorbet) from 30-plus flavors, and then toppings from a list of such 35-plus options as candy, cookies and cereal, fruits and sauces. The ice cream is made in front of the customer with a lot of billowing smoke, thanks to the flash-freezing process, the company said.

"When the liquid nitrogen (-321° F) hits the base, it freezes so fast that ice crystals don't have a chance to develop, resulting in a decadently rich and luxuriously creamy ice cream with virtually no overrun," officials said.

Creamistry has 45 shops operating in four states, primarily in Southern California, and has plans for 300 additional locations worldwide. For more information, visit www.creamistry.com.
