Colo. State Trooper Dies After Being Struck During Blizzard

WELD COUNTY, CO – A Colorado State Patrol Deputy was killed Wednesday after being struck by a car that lost control on I-76, the CSP said in a statement Wednesday.

Around 11:20 a.m., a 2001 Volvo lost control and slid off the roadway on westbound I-76 near mile-marker 47. The car, driven by John Carpenter, 58, of Centennial struck Colorado State Patrol Corporal Daniel Groves, 52.

Groves was taken to Platte Valley Medical Center, where he died shortly thereafter. The driver was also briefly hospitalized, but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. He was released.

High speeds and poor driving conditions are being investigated as factors in the accident, the CSP said. The driver has not yet been charged.

Groves served with the state patrol since 2007. He is survived by his partner of two years, the CSP said in a statement.
