No Bully Upstander Of The Month: Colorado Boy Practices Kindness
Ceremony to celebrate student at Morton Elementary School who is the Upstander of the Month!

Deshawn Kindred was honored at a special ceremony at Morton Elementary School which is part of Pueblo City Schools in Colorado. Senator Leroy Garcia, honored the student for being nominated as No Bully’s Upstander of the Month. No Bully has been working with the school district to eliminate bullying and ignite compassion for the past three years and is so honored to acknowledge Deshawn’s kindness and courage. Deshawn’s teacher nominated him by saying “he is an all around positive role model for our students and is always kind to others, treating them with great respect, empathy, and compassion.”
According to his teachers, Deshawn started off rather shy but has grown into his own. He began student council this year a bit timid at first. However, when it was time to give his first speech Deshawn showed his true colors by sporting a red, white, and blue "Uncle Sam" hat. Deshawn continues to grow and encourages others to be their best selves.
He is not only part of Morton Elementary Schools Student Bully Prevention Team, but also the Vice President of their Student Body. Deshawn intervenes for others. When he sees other students in need, he is always willing to give a helping hand. He has, not once, spoken negatively about anything or anyone and he takes on each task with pride and motivation. Deshawn always has a smile on his face and makes others feel welcome. He truly stands behind Morton’s vision statement which says; "Team Morton, Where Everybody is Somebody."

No Bully was honored to meet Deshawn in person in front of an audience of 500 students and parents from across the school community. We not only honored Deshawn, but also his family who sat in the crowd which included his parents, two brothers, and grandmother. They had obviously done a wonderful job raising him and should be proud of Deshawns’ accomplishments. We left Deshawn with a hard copy certificate of honor and also a hat from Random Hats of Kindness, which read “Be Kind.” He immediately put it on and had a big smile across his face. We look forward to following Deshawn’s journey and seeing what other gifts he brings to the world.
