Small Earthquake Near Aspen Felt By More Than A Dozen

A magnitude-2.8 earthquake occurred near the city known for its ski resorts Saturday night, the U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed.

ASPEN, CO — A magnitude-2.8 earthquake could be felt in parts of Colorado late Saturday night, including in the popular ski destination Aspen.

More than 20 people reported feeling the earthquake that occurred around 9 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The nearest town to the earthquake's epicenter is Norrie, which has a population of seven, the USGS said.

It was a "very small fault" on the north side of Larkspur Mountain, about seven miles from Aspen, where the earthquake was centered, a geophysicist told the Aspen Times.

The Saturday night earthquake is the 19th to hit the Aspen-area since 1986, the geophysicist said.

People who felt the earthquake can report it to USGS, which as of 11:40 a.m. Sunday had 23 confirmations.
