Video Shows Colorado Officers Laughing At 73-Year-Old’s Arrest
Karen Garner suffered a dislocated shoulder and broken arm when Loveland police officers arrested her last June, according to a report.
LOVELAND, CO — Recently released security footage shows Colorado police officers joking about arresting someone who has dementia with one of the officers saying "I can't believe I threw a 73-year-old woman on the ground," according to a new report.
The nearly one hour video was released Monday by the attorney of Karen Garner, who has filed a lawsuit against the Loveland Police Department accusing officers of using excessive force against her.
“These videos cannot be unseen or unheard. I am sorry to have to share them with the public,” Sarah Schielke, Garner’s attorney, said in a statement. “If I didn’t release this, the Loveland Police’s toxic culture of arrogance and entitlement, along with their horrific abuse of the vulnerable and powerless, would carry on, business as usual.”

In the video, a group of officers can be seen sitting in front of a computer watching body camera footage of Garner’s arrest. One officer, identified as Austin Hopp, told the others if they were "ready for the pop," seemingly in reference to the moment Garner’s arm was dislocated while she was being arrested, according to The Coloradoan.
“Hear the pop?” Hopp said in the video. “I think it was her shoulder.”

Garner also suffered a fractured arm and sprained wrist, according to the paper.
Another officer, identified as Daria Jalali, appears to cover her eyes and exclaim she “hates this” as the group continues to watch footage of Garner's arrest, The Coloradoan reported. Hopp could then be heard laughing at the arrest footage, saying “this is awesome.”
Earlier in the video, the two officers also fist bumped each other over the arrest; with Hopp telling Jalali they “crushed it.”
As this was happening, Garner sat in a holding cell only several feet away from the officers, the paper reported.
The lawsuit alleges Garner was left in her cell for several hours until she received medical attention.
Hopp, Jalali and a third officer, Phil Metzler, have been placed on paid administrative leave while Garner's arrest is being investigated.
