Arvada Bowler Leaves USBC Open Championships With Singles Lead

"Taking the singles lead feels incredible," Arvada pro bowler Rick Schafer told Bowl.com.

LAS VEGAS — A pro bowler from Arvada made his city proud by leaving with the Regular Singles lead at the U.S. Bowling Congress Open Championships in Las Vegas.

Rick Schafer, 43, lives in Arvada but owns and operates the Leave Your Mark Pro Shop in Lakewood.

He came within one strike of the first 800 series and "was three strikes from becoming the 37th bowler in history with a 300 game and 800 series on the championship lanes," read a feature on Bowl.com.

"I didn't realize I struck that much," Schafer told the publication. "I just knew I didn't get the one I wanted. I got a little too amped up."

"As much as I wanted the 800, taking the singles lead feels incredible."

This is the 22nd time Schafer has competed in the Open Championships.
