Arvada Citizen Boards And Commissions Seek Members For 2019

Have your say in the public policy and decisions that affect Arvada by joining a citizen commission. Deadline in January.

ARVADA, CO – If your New Year's resolution for 2019 will be getting more involved in your local civic life, Arvada's volunteer citizens boards and commissions may have a spot for you.

The City of Arvada announced that nine local citizen working groups have vacancies starting in 2019. Volunteers on the commissions have a voice in the public policy and decisions that affect Arvada, by making recommendations for the city council. Most commissions and boards require a background check and many require that you be a citizen of Arvada.

Applying for a board or commission is a two-step process. first you must fill out the General Application, then answer supplemental questions specific to the group you wish to join.

Online applications are due by noon on Jan. 14, 2019.

Here are the boards and commissions that will have vacancies in 2019:

  • Arvada Arts and Culture Commission (Three vacancies) The nine-member Arvada Arts and Culture Commission (AACC) supports, cultivates, and advocates for a variety of arts, culture, and heritage opportunities throughout the community. Meetings: Second Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m.
  • Arvada Festivals Commission (Seven vacancies) The Arvada Festivals Commission sponsors, coordinates, plans and works with community-based organizations on festivals of community-wide celebration by promoting activities consistent with public celebration. These events include the Winter Fest, High Tea for Seniors, Kite Festival, Arvada on Tap and Arvada Days. Meetings: Generally on the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m., plus subcommittee meetings as necessary.
  • Arvada Golf Advisory Committee (Three vacancies) The Arvada Golf Advisory Committee advises and assists the Arvada City Council and Department of Parks, Golf and Hospitality on matters pertaining to golf, the City’s golf courses and the golfing public. The committee assists in the implementation of Arvada Golf’s strategic plan and works cooperatively with the citizens as a forum through which their thoughts can be heard. Meetings: Second Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
  • Arvada Park Advisory Committee (Three vacancies) The Arvada Park Advisory Committee (APAC) prioritizes and makes recommendations to the City Council on projects for parks, open space and trails; works with the city's Parks, Golf and Hospitality Department to prioritize park and open space issues; actively participates in park dedications and occasional field trips to parks, trails and open space areas; and works cooperatively with Apex Park and Recreation district board and staff. Meetings: Second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
  • Arvada Sustainability Advisory Committee: (Two vacancies) The Arvada Sustainability Advisory Committee provides strategic guidance for the implementation of Sustain Arvada. Sustain Arvada is a way of honoring Arvada's rich heritage and preserving our resources to foster economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and community vitality today and into the future. This committee works closely with city staff to monitor the progress of goals and programs. Meetings: Second Wednesday of the month at 6:15 p.m.
  • Arvada Urban Renewal Authority (One vacancy) Arvada Urban Renewal Authority (AURA) is responsible for revitalizing urban areas designated throughout the community by creating successful, high-quality projects that will help produce a vibrant, cohesive city and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Arvada. Meetings: First Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
  • Board of Adjustment (One vacancy) The Board of Adjustment is a seven-member board that hears all appeals of the zoning ordinance and requests for variance to the Land Development Code. Appointees are paid $75.00 per meeting. Meetings: The second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 p.m.
  • Human Services Advisory Committee (One vacancy) The Human Services Advisory Committee advises the City Council on the allocation of funding from the Human Services funding pool, as well as the funding for public services from the Community Development Block Grant. Meeting: Once per year in late Fall to review grant applications.
  • Transportation Committee (Two vacancies) The Transportation Committee is a citizens’ committee that studies, recommends and participates in a variety of efforts to foster a safe, efficient and sustainable multi-modal transportation system. The Committee is involved in prioritization of projects, bike and pedestrian studies and evaluating transportation funding options. Meetings: Fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

Applications will be reviewed in mid-January and interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of February 25, 2019. Appointments to boards will be made in April, 2019.

Citizens are limited to 10-12 years of service per board or committee. Applicants are considered for appointment regardless of race, religion, sex, age, national origin or disability. deadline>
